"Man's right to know, to learn, to inquire, to make bona fide errors, to investigate human emotions must, by all means, be safe, if the word freedom should ever be more than an empty political slogan." -- Wilhelm Reich, at his trial
Wilhelm Reich in Hell uses clowns, politicians, social activists, a live 4-piece rock band and historical facts to tell the story of Dr. Wilhelm Reich’s final attempt to free mankind from its “emotional plague.” Set in a circus-like courtroom vaguely resembling Hell, where the Ringmaster sits as judge and the Marquis de Sade and Masoch are the prosecuting attorneys, Wilhelm Reich sits accused of attempting to corrupt humanity. Reich must admit his wrongdoing in order to be blissfully assimilated back into the general human consciousness or be subject to death and rebirth as in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Reich fervently argues till the bitter end that if mankind could release itself from the oppressive concept of morality (i.e. right and wrong, good and evil), humanity would cure itself from its “emotional plague” and find peace. Reich asks the court whether the beliefs, traditions and “morals” passed down from generation to generation have created tranquility or fear in society.
