History

Award-winning Los Angeles theatre company Son of Semele Ensemble (SOSE) began its work in 2000. Named after the patron Greek god of theatre (Dionysus) who was the son of the mortal woman Semele, the company was founded by Artistic Director Matthew McCray who brought together 11 of his colleagues to produce his original play Earthlings. Since that time, SOSE has grown to 25 company members and produced over 18 productions ranging from world premieres to published works.

Over its seven-year history, SOSE has earned praise from critics and peers alike. SOSE holds seventeen award nominations from LA Stage League Alliance, the NAACP and LA Weekly. SOSE's award honors include Ovation Awards for their 2002 production of Animal Farm (Best Musical, Intimate Venue and Best Director of a Musical), NAACP Theatre Awards their 2004 production of Matthew Maguire's The Tower (Best Choreography), and LA Weekly Theatre Awards for SOSE's 2006 production of Iphigenia...A Rave Fable by Caridad Svich (Best Lighting Design and three special recognition awards for Masks, Puppets and Multi-Media/Projections).

The company presents a staged reading series called RAPID (Readings As Projects In Development) to aid in the development of new work that may one day receive a SOSE production. SOSE has produced training sessions for company members and the greater Los Angeles theatre community including physical and vocal performance techniques, theatre devising techniques and technical theatre. Also, SOSE offers an internship each year to an undergraduate theatre student interested in learning about ensemble companies.

SOSE is a participant of the script-sharing program at New Dramatists in New York. The company is funded by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, and has also received support from Arts Presenters in New York.
