Ensemble

Mission

We believe the impact of a theatrical experience should resonate beyond the theater door. As an ensemble of artists, we integrate complex design and performance, producing theatre that embraces the friction between emotion and intellect. Through a process of discovery, collaboration and creative risk-taking, we illuminate and amplify universal questions. To that end, we make an earnest commitment to the artistic sustainability of the greater community.

History

Son of Semele Ensemble (SoSE) is a Los Angeles-based ensemble theatre company comprised of 25+ actors, directors, designers, dramaturgs and producers. We develop and produces innovative theatrical productions, and through a variety of programs we support the work of likeminded artists who are taking bold steps in their work.

To date we have produced over 30 productions in Los Angeles, most of which have been presented in our 36-seat flexible black-box space in Silver Lake. Each year we produce two productions of our own, the Company Creation Festival for company-generated work, Solo Creation Festival for solo artists and host a variety of guest productions through our Guest Production Program. Within the Los Angeles theatre community, SoSE is considered a leader, an innovator and a unique and vital voice.

In 2004, American Theatre profiled SoSE as one of the nation’s up-and-coming young theatre companies and published our work on the magazine’s cover. We have been honored with two LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards (nine nominations), five LA Weekly Theatre Awards (eleven nominations), four Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards, a SAGE Award and an NAACP Theatre Award (four nominations). In 2011, Cyclops: A Rock Opera,, a production created by Psittacus Productions and which was created and premiered during Company Creation Festival, traveled the country and was nominated for a 2012 Pulitzer Prize. SoSE has been featured in the international theatre journal TheatreForum and numerous times in LA Weekly’s “Why Theatre Matters” issue.
