Shar wins an NAACP Award!

Edgar Feb 22

Congrats to our very own Shar Gabriel for winning the NAACP Theatre Award for Best Choreography for her work on The Tower!!!!!!!!

The evening was looooong and most of us didn't make it through the 5-hour ordeal but we are happy for Shar! AND her family and Ryan were there also to see her make a lovely acceptance speech. ;-)

Congrats also to Best Director nominee Barbara Kallir, Best Lighting Design nominee Max Pierson and the cast of The Tower who were nominated for Best Ensemble Cast.

Another successful Chapman alum! (FYI, the NAACP website is a monster. It took me about 45min to track down the winners... but I was very happy when I finally found Shar's name as a winner!) Again, congrats!!

Hey Shar, congratulations, I'm happy my shooting you all those time (and occasionally strangling you) has not impeded you career. Can I ask a stupid question. Why did the award come from the NAACP? The National Assocation for the Advancement of Colored People? I'm sure I'm missing something here so will somebody fill me in. Thanks.

The NAACP Theatre Awards recognize productions that feature African-American artists and/or have themes realting to the African-American experience. Although it focuses on African-American artists it is not exclusive. Other artists of color (and not) are also recognized. SOSE's production of THE TOWER featured two African-American actors: Lisa Tharps who played the principle role and Darryl Ordell who played a supporting role. Last year, I was nominated for an NAACP Theatre Award in fight choreography for my work in OTHELLO at Shakespeare Orange County.

THE TOWER actually featured three artists on stage of non-Caucasian roots. In addition to Lisa and Darryl, powerhouse singer Thomas Welton Pitchford is also of African-American heritage. Michelle Silver of Jewish heritage/faith was also in the cast. Our award-winning choreographer, Sharyn Gabriel's ethnic makeup includes that of the Philippines. And others involved in the production, including composer Andrew Ingkavet, (what is dance without music?) and dramaturg Damon Chua are both of Asian descent.
Go Shar! Go SOSE! Go artists of all backgrounds!

Well thank you Michelle for remembering me. I was beginning to think, "maybe I wasn't in the production after all and if so, why was I at that hell of a looooong awards show?" Truth be told, I would've stayed 5 hours and 5 minutes to see Shar accept her award.. KUDOS my love..until we work together again...I miss you SOSE peeps
