Hello my Kitties. This will be my one non-King Cat posting, but Inger Tudor, president of the AMB at Theatre of NOTe asked if I would post this message to SOSE. Actually, this posting is not totally non-King Cat related, because if you are free this Saturday night, try to check out the closing night of "Idle Worship" at Theatre of NOTE. It's an evening of two one acts, and the first piece, "Free Fanjul" definitely touches upon some of the themes of desparation and neediness we are exporing in King Cat. Also, the extremes that people will allow themselves to go for love. Here is Inger's posting as an 'Extended Entry'. See ya tonight:
__________
Please join us this Saturday, May 27 at 4:30 pm at Theatre of NOTE for
a moderated discussion open to the LA theatre community, entitled:
"Multifacial: The Challenges of Gender, Preference and Ethnicity in LA
Theatre."
Our current show, Idle Worship, features two one-acts: Free Fanjul, by
Dennis Miles, which explores love and obsession in a homosexual
relationship (double-cast with alternating male and female casts) and
Brandohead, by Chris Danowski, an absurdist portrayal of ethnically
"unidentifiable" actors struggling in Hollywood.
Even today, do our LA theatre companies, writers, directors and actors
still face challenges in producing work that goes beyond the scope of
traditional theatre? Are audiences more comfortable with the idea of
lesbians than of gay men? Does the gesture of double casting try to
challenge that? Is gender- or race-blind casting possible or necessary?
Is there ever a point when such casting no longer "serves the play"?
These questions arise continually in our theatrical community and this
is your chance to make your voice heard. Both of our writers will be in
attendance for this moderated discussion. Please join us from
4:30-6:30, this Saturday, May 27 at Theatre of NOTE, 1517 Cahuenga
Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028 (just north of Sunset). Admission is free.
(And after you grab dinner, please come back and join us at 8pm for
the closing night of Idle Worship.)
Peace&Blessings,
Inger Tudor
