Preludes & Fugues Rehearsal Diary Wednesday 8/24/05 10:30 AM

Last night started off on a slightly jarring note. We arrived at rehearsal only to discover that the theatre has been booked for another SOSE project and we had not been alerted (or I had forgotten). We moved to my apartment where many rehearsals have been had over the years and proceeded to get down to business. Luckily, we are still doing table work so sitting in my living room actually felt cozy and intimate. I like our theatre space. It has a good vibe to it. It's important for a theatre space to have a creative energy within it. It is hard to exactly articulate what this is but one can feel it when one enters a "good" space. However, it is sometimes good to work in a new environment. I think last night's schedule fuck-up actually ended up serving the rehearsal.
We spent the whole evening looking at the final scene in the play in which the four voices/consciousness' of the characters weave in and out of each other, echoing, overlapping, cutting off, and complementing each other. It is highly musical in its structure and demands a specificity of thought from the actor more so than in any other scene. The story arcs and thoughts of the actors are fragmented reflecting their emotional landscape.
It was exciting to work through the scene - actually, only the beginning of the scene - line by line, word by word, emotional thought by emotional thought, and actually begin to hear the music of the language by the end of the rehearsal.
All in all, a very satisfying rehearsal.
OH!Almost forgot...we listened to some of the pieces that Ryan has composed. They are fantastic and will definitely help in telling the story of the play. More on this later...

Breath.
