As with most really exhausting and fulfilling productions... closing weekend is bitter-sweet. For those who have seen The Mysteries, it goes without saying that this production was Son of Semele Ensemble's largest "reach"... in many ways:
Four hours of Medieval cycle plays presented in a physically demanding, audience surrounding, sometimes acrobatic and highly emotion context.
The pain and tears of a six month process (rehearsals and a 10 week span of performances) has created a very strong bond amongst our cast and crew. It will surely be a tough production to let go of.
This production has been so many things. Too many to write really... however... it has been a test.... of perseverance, of passion, of artistry, of faith in ourselves and of faith in others.
I was talking to someone outside the theater following one of our Sunday marathon performances (all 4 hours in one day) and he was quite sure that this was SOSE's strongest piece to date. He said, having seen almost everything we've done, that The Mysteries was "complete" in its message, vision and attack. I can't agree or disagree with that because I'm too close to it. I can only say that through this project my belief in "myself as an artist" has been reinviguerated and if that is what exploring biblical stories has given me... I am grateful and very satisfied.
